## Can I Fix My Water Heater Myself?

From dish washing and laundry to showering and simple hand washing, your water heater is used every day. Because of this daily use, it’s not uncommon for problems to develop over time. There are a few things you can check yourself that might fix the problem your water heater is having.

### What to do if an Electric Water Heater isn’t Heating
One obvious but simple reason the water heater won’t heat is a tripped circuit breaker. Your electric water heater needs 240 volts of power to work. Check both breakers for the water heater by turning them both off and then back on again. This will reset the breakers if they were tripped. If the breakers trip again, one of the heating elements has likely broken and shorted out and will need to be replaced.

Another problem could be a tripped high-temperature limit switch. You can check the switch by shutting off the circuit breakers to the water heater, and then remove the cover over the upper heating element to access the switch. Reset the switch by pressing the red button. If after turning the breakers back on the water heater starts working, you may still have a problem. The limit switch prevents the water from overheating. If the switch tripped, it’s possible a heating element or the thermostat has failed causing the water to get too hot. The failure will need to be fixed to prevent scalding.

### What to do if a Gas Water Heater isn’t Heating

As with an electric water heater, you should check the circuit breaker first. A gas water heater has a single circuit breaker. Reset it by turning it off and then turning it back on again. 

If resetting the circuit breaker doesn’t solve the problem, check the gas supply shut-off valve and make sure it’s fully open. 

Also check the pilot light, and relight it if needed. If the pilot won’t stay lit, you likely have a bad thermocouple.

### What to do When Your Water Heater is Getting the Water Too Hot

The setting on the water heater’s thermostat could be too high. Check the thermostat to see if it’s set above 130 degrees. Lower the temperature setting to your desired comfort. Families with small children should set the thermostat no higher than 120 degrees to prevent scalding. If this is still too hot, try adjusting it to 110 degrees.

If adjusting the thermostat doesn’t lower the water temperature, it’s possible the thermostat is defective and should be replaced.

Another possible cause for overheating in an electric water heater is the heating element. A short-circuit between a broken element and the tank could cause the element to heat constantly. In this case, the element needs to be replaced.

### What to do If Your Water Heater is Leaking

If you find your water heater is leaking water, you’ll need to determine where it’s leaking from. Check the water pipe fittings first and tighten any that are loose. Also check the pressure relief valve and the drain valve for leaks. If either of these valves are behind the leak, the culprit will need to be replaced.

The heating element in an electric water heater could also be the source of the leak. Check to see if it is loose, and tighten it if needed. If the element is cracked or otherwise damaged, it should be replaced.

### What to do if Your Hot Water Has a Rotten-Egg Smell

The water heater has an anode rod inside that protects the water heater tank from corrosion. In some conditions a chemical reaction between the water supply and the anode rod produces hydrogen sulfide gas, causing the hot water to smell like rotten eggs. A less-reactive aluminum alloy anode rod can be installed in the water heater to combat the odor.
